Sha soku jinsei expresses a view of shooting and life as inseparable. The book connects a single shot with the accumulation of daily attitudes and ways of treating people, rather than viewing it as an isolated special occasion.
Ueoka writes that haste and uncertainty, as well as calm, can appear in shooting. He extends the insight that we cannot simply put on a different self for important moments to everyday speech and work. The person in the dojo and the person outside it are not treated as unrelated. This continuity is central to his reading of the phrase.
However, a failed shot is not a basis for passing judgment on someone's life or character. Accuracy is not a direct measure of a person's worth. The phrase can instead be used as a question about our own ordinary conduct. Did we listen to someone as carefully as we intended? Did we treat a commitment lightly because we were busy? Considering the connection between these small actions and practice allows the learning of kyudo to extend beyond the dojo.
