At an important event, it is natural to want to look better and achieve a good result. Ueoka describes approaching shinsa, or grading examinations, and tournaments by returning to his everyday shooting rather than trying to become someone special that day.
The book reflects his sense that skill cannot suddenly improve on the day itself. Wanting a result too intensely can prompt an attempt to do something different from usual. Familiar aspects of practice, including the stance, breathing, and mezukai, are described as points of return. This is the author's personal approach to performance occasions.
Returning to the familiar does not mean skipping preparation or forbidding oneself to feel nervous. It means valuing what has already been checked in practice. An experienced practitioner might review the tasks agreed with an instructor rather than accumulate new adjustments immediately beforehand. This attitude does not guarantee a pass or a hit. After the event, reflecting on how everyday work appeared, as well as on the outcome, can connect the occasion with the next practice.
