How do we close the distance between speaking about a great purpose and keeping today's promise? This is one approach to makoto, sincerity, in the book. Trust is not treated as something demonstrated only on exceptional occasions.

Chapter 3 addresses the relationship between words and actions. Chapter 4 brings it into ordinary matters such as replying, keeping time, and communicating when something cannot be done. Rather than making grand promises we cannot keep, we can do what is possible and tell others promptly when circumstances change. Makoto is brought into actions that can be examined in daily life.

In kyudo, arrangements for practice, care of equipment, and exchanges with others can involve trust beyond the shot. This is an application of the text, not a claim that shooting results determine sincerity. Explaining a failure without hiding the facts also matters. Instead of aiming to become a person who never makes a mistake, we can consider how we take responsibility for our words. Starting with the next reply or a single commitment brings a large ethical term closer to everyday life.

大きな志を語ることと、今日の約束を守ること。その距離をどう縮めるかが、本書の「誠」を読む手掛かりです。信頼は、特別な場面だけで示されるものとして扱われていません。

第三章では言葉と行動の一致が、第四章では返事や時間、できない時の連絡といった日常の行為が取り上げられます。守れない約束を大きく掲げるより、できることを実行し、難しくなった時には早めに伝える。誠を、暮らしの中で確かめられる行動へ置き直しています。

弓道の場でも、稽古の約束や道具の扱い、周囲とのやり取りなど、射以外に信頼が関わる場面があります。これは本文から考えた応用であり、成績によって誠実さが決まるという意味ではありません。できなかった時に、事実を隠さず説明できるかも大切です。完璧に失敗しない人を目指すより、自分の言葉にどのように責任を持つかを見る。誠という大きな言葉を、次の返事や一つの約束から考えると、道徳と日常の間の距離が近づきます。
