If we watch only the moment an arrow is released, kyudo can appear to be a repetition of brief movements. In this book, standing, sitting, walking, and bowing are also part of the practice of drawing the bow.
Chapter 2 describes learning through the movements themselves. Ueoka's teacher paid attention not only to shooting but also to movement and conduct in the dojo. Time without a bow in hand was not simply waiting time unrelated to the shot.
Seen this way, practice has a wider beginning and ending. The attitude brought into the dojo, consideration for other people, and the way we receive instruction can all be part of learning. This does not mean remaining tense throughout everyday life. We can start by noticing one moment we had previously overlooked. Specific movements should be learned and checked with an instructor, rather than reconstructed from an article. The book's point is that even time which seems to lie outside the practice can contain something worth learning.
