We may be able to do something yet struggle to explain it to someone else. In the book, teaching less experienced practitioners becomes an opportunity for Ueoka to examine his own understanding again.
Only after taking on a teaching role did he notice the difference between understanding something and having become able to do it. Observing another person's shooting led him to reconsider his own, reread the manual, and recall his teacher's words. Learning was not simply a one-way transfer from teacher to learner.
This perspective also matters when a question has no immediate answer. Holding a teaching role does not require explaining everything on the spot. Returning to a teacher or the manual, rather than teaching something uncertain as settled, can be part of a responsible approach to learning. Nor will a method that made sense to us necessarily make sense to someone else. Listening to questions and finding where another person is struggling can reveal limits in our own understanding. Greater responsibility for teaching gives us more reason to leave room for learning again.
