Courtesy is not only for people in less powerful positions. The book presents rei as especially important when a person holds greater power or authority and must take care not to disregard others.

Chapter 3 describes an attitude that does not become arrogant in victory or lose control in defeat. Maintaining respect for others also keeps strength from turning into one-sided conduct. This passage offers another angle on the dojo etiquette described in Chapter 2: how we use power.

Experience can bring more occasions to teach or make judgments. At those moments, do we notice when someone may find it difficult to disagree with us? Do we interrupt questions or dismiss a person because of a result? These are applications of the book's ideas to ordinary situations. Correct outward forms are not the whole meaning of rei if an attitude of contempt remains. The stronger our position, the more reason we have to check the words we choose and how we listen. This is a way of reading rei that does not stop at the movement itself.
