Is a courageous person someone who feels no fear? The book allows fear and a necessary step forward to coexist. Yu, understood here as courage, cannot be measured by the absence of apprehension alone.
Ueoka describes moving along a chosen path while still feeling anxious about failure or rejection. He also stresses that courage is different from recklessness and must be connected with what is right. The term is not unconditional praise for entering danger.
Applied to practice, a small act of courage might be asking about something we do not understand. Having an unfinished aspect of our practice observed can feel uncomfortable, but admitting it creates an opening for learning. This is an everyday application developed from the passage. There is no need to prove courage by continuing despite danger or physical strain. We can ask why a step matters and whether it is appropriate. Reading yu together with gi reveals an approach to action that does not depend on momentum alone.
