Do we see instruction as a time to be taught everything from the start, or as a time to check what we have been working on? Ueoka describes practice as a cycle between daily life and the dojo.

He considers what he has been taught, works on it in everyday life, and asks his teacher to observe. He then takes the resulting discoveries back into daily practice before returning to check again. Another person's eye can reveal a difference in something we think we already do well. The teacher is presented as someone who reflects aspects of ourselves that have become difficult to see alone.

Experienced practitioners can apply this by briefly organizing the previous feedback and the point they now want to check. The purpose is not to prove success, but to share what is understood and what remains unclear. This does not mean that beginners must teach themselves the basics before arriving. A first-time experience and an experienced practitioner's session with a specific question are different situations. Receiving instruction appropriate to one's stage is the foundation of this cycle.
