Ueoka describes an exchange between reading, thinking, checking in the dojo, and returning to the text when something remained unclear. What he received from the same words changed through his teens, twenties, and thirties. The manual had not changed; new questions had made more of it accessible to him.
Rereading need not mean trying to understand everything from the beginning. One approach is to return to a passage connected with a recent question from practice, then check its interpretation with an instructor. Feeling that we understand a sentence is not the same as understanding it in actual shooting or movement. The author's statement that he did not receive systematic classroom lessons describes his personal learning history. It is not an argument that classroom learning is unnecessary. The passage is better read as an account of reading and practical experience deepening one another.
