Looking for causes in oneself can sometimes be confused with harsh self-rejection. The book explicitly distinguishes taking responsibility for a mistake from continuing to blame oneself.
The kyudo chapter encourages looking for something one can change to improve the next arrow. The chapter on everyday ethics likewise emphasizes accepting what happened, apologizing when necessary, making a correction, and moving on. A failure is neither erased nor allowed to fix the person's future identity.
When reflection leads toward a specific action, it becomes possible to see what to check next. Repeating only that one is no good leaves the needed correction unclear. In practice or at work, asking what happened and what can change gives learning somewhere to go. If the situation is difficult to sort out alone, there is also room to speak with someone trustworthy. The aim is not to compete in the severity of self-criticism, but to reflect in a way that leads to the next action.
