The value of a lesson is not always apparent when we first receive it. Looking back on his teacher's instruction, Ueoka remembers the foundations of how to stand before the bow more strongly than any demand for immediate accuracy.
He names posture, courtesy, breathing, mezukai or the use of the eyes, and ways of standing and sitting among the things Kondo-sensei (近藤峯英) taught him. At the time, he did not fully understand how these elements connected. Repetition nevertheless left an impression that gained meaning later. The book presents this as the author's own experience.
One lesson here is not to judge learning only by its immediate usefulness. That does not mean accepting everything without understanding or questioning it. We can ask questions while also allowing time to revisit the fundamentals we have been taught. Greater experience may reveal a different depth in familiar words. Respect for a teacher need not close down inquiry; it can also mean continuing to think about their teaching through our own practice.
