After an arrow misses, how we receive the result also matters. When attention turns toward the conditions or the people around us, the book offers another starting point: look first for something within our own approach that can change.
Ueoka observes that an arrow already released cannot return, while the next one is still in our hands. This is not an instruction to place every cause on ourselves. It is a way of moving from dissatisfaction with others toward something that can be learned next.
Separating what happened from how we felt about it can make a question for an instructor more specific. Did we maintain the point we were attending to? Which part remained unclear? We do not have to determine the cause alone; being observed is also important. Rather than allowing one result to define our entire worth, we can identify a task that can be worked on. The self-reflection described in the book is directed less toward repeatedly regretting a finished shot than toward taking responsibility for the next practice.
