Why is the apparently individual act of drawing a bow linked with jin, a term associated with care for others? The saying Ueoka values, that shooting is a way of jin, invites us to consider the shot in relation to other people.
In Chapter 2, the saying is followed by the idea of seeking what is right in one's own shooting. When an arrow misses, the task is to look for something one can change rather than blame another person. The purpose is not endless self-reproach, but learning that can be carried into the next arrow.
In this reading, care is not limited to speaking kindly. A practitioner can be dissatisfied with a result without directing that frustration at the people nearby, and can instead review their own approach. That attitude also respects others sharing the place of practice. It does not make a shooting result a judgment of whether someone is good or bad. The saying can be received as a question about the attitude we develop through each shot. Working on technique and refusing to treat others carelessly meet within the same dojo.
