A hit feels satisfying; a miss can be disappointing. Can we acknowledge those feelings without judging an entire practice session by its results? The book approaches this question through Ueoka's experience of learning from his teacher.
Ueoka recalls that Kondo-sensei (近藤峯英) did not begin by teaching him to prioritize hitting the target above everything else. Repeated instruction in posture, courtesy, and breathing eventually led him to understand that he was learning how to stand before the bow as a person. At the same time, the book explicitly states that accuracy matters in archery.
It is important to retain both points. If a hit makes everything right and a miss makes everything wrong, changes along the way become easy to overlook. While asking an instructor to assess the shooting, a practitioner can also reflect on how they approached the point they were working on. The book offers a way of learning that neither escapes into abstract ideas about spirit nor measures the practitioner solely by a score.
