Mezukai, the use and direction of the eyes in kyudo, involves more than simply keeping the eyes open. The book presents learning where and when to look as something connected with the attention brought to a shot.
Ueoka remembers strict instruction not to glance around without purpose. As with breathing and the work of the feet, the eyes are not treated as separate from the movement of the whole body. This is not a claim that adjusting the eyes alone completes a shot.
The passage offers a starting point for reflecting on attention during practice. Are we preoccupied with hits, comparing ourselves with others, or attending to the task we were given? Such reflection should be distinguished from technical instruction in mezukai. Do not use this article alone to decide the position or sequence of the gaze; check the actual movements with an instructor. Nor is a person's gaze a basis for judging their inner life or character. The words are best revisited as a way of understanding the movement of one's own attention.
