In kyudo, the target stands before us. In life, we have to consider for ourselves what to call success and what to value. Chapter 5 begins from this difference to ask about choosing one's own way.
The book does not reject goals such as income or status simply because society values them. It does, however, point out that pursuing someone else's definition of success can lead us to lose sight of what mattered to us. Choosing a goal involves the values we want to preserve.
When choosing our own target, we can consider not only the image of achievement but also the everyday life we want to lead on the way. If time with others matters, does the goal continually remove that time? Does the wish to improve arise from our own interest? These questions bring the text into the reader's daily life. There is no need to produce a completed answer immediately. Checking what we value before deciding what to pursue can help us choose a way that is not determined solely by other people's judgments.
